With time for submissions on alternative flag designs closing next week, they freely admit their appetite for change means they are in the minority but they say that could come around once viable alternatives are found.

“This seems to be something John Key want...I haven’t spoken to one person who’s for it.” However, the Godsiff’s disagree. The pair are both in the tourism industry and are tired of people thinking the flag is Australia’s. “We get people even when they’re in New Zealand asking why we are flying the Australian flag,” Ryan says. “As time has progressed we have become our own independent country and we need our own identity...It does nothing for us
internationally,” Chris says. “We understand the RSA has strong feelings on it and it’s not a case of disrespecting the sacrifice made...On many of the graves it’s a silver fern anyway,” Ryan says. “I don’t think there’s a desire for change but if there is sound logic and good choices then that would help. The duo has thrown their support behind Kyle Lockwood’s black and blue design with a silver fern and four stars for the Southern Cross.
“There is a lot of ways of looking at the flag, you could look at the black being the night and the blue being the day and the silver fern showing that we are the first to see the light,” Ryan says. “The blue also shows the amount of water we have and how influenced we are by it,” he says. Chris says he has had nothing but positive comments about the flag. Over 5200 designs have been published so far with a likely shortlist of 50 to 75 flag ideas due to be released in mid-August.

White whale wonder spotted A rare white humpback whale spotted in Cook Strait yesterday by Department of Conservation researchers is thought to be ‘Migaloo’, a white humpback usually seen off Australia. The white humpback whale was seen with another normal black humpback during the Cook Strait Whale Survey which is in the last week of its 12th annual four-week count of whales passing through Cook Strait. The two whales were first spotted by Ted Perano, one of six ex-whalers on the survey team, but it was only when approached by boat that researchers were surprised to find one was white. “I thought, wow that whale is white, that is amazing!” says John Gibbs, skipper of
the boat. “This is so unique. I have never seen anything like this in New Zealand,” was the reaction of marine mammal scientist Carlos Olavarria, who was also on the boat. Survey leader, Nadine Bott, says distinctive features on the whale like those on Migaloo strongly indicated it was the same whale. They include the dorsal fin’s distinctive shape and also distinctive spiny protuberances behind the dorsal fin. Animals with these are commonly called ‘razor backs’. Dublin Street site for Picton Library The Marlborough District Council has confirmed the site for Picton’s new library and councillors have approved the property purchase required for the project to move to the next stage. Last year community consultation began on the location for a new Library and Council Service Centre for the town. Council’s Long Term Plan has allocated a budget of $6M for these improvements to Picton. Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman says the council has now secured a block of land on Dublin Street with a corner frontage to High Street as the site for the new building. The Picton community had made it clear this was its preferred site, the Mayor says. The location is the halfway point between the tourist-based waterfront and the retail and business area around Mariners Mall heavily used by local residents.
The concept drawings for the library, which were drawn by Urbanismplus consultant Kobus Mentz during the public consultation process earlier in the year. It is unclear whether the designs will bear any resemblance to the final design.
This site will give the town a strong anchor building linking one end of Picton’s High Street with the other, says Mr Sowman. “It’s an elevated site on a busy corner and should act as a beacon drawing people from both ends of the town.”
As well as confirming the Dublin Street-High Street location for the new building, MDC has approved the purchase of two adjoining properties in Dublin Street which will be converted into parking space. In the short term, he said, these

properties would provide muchneeded parking space for Picton. “We have no immediate funding allocated for more parking in the Picton business area so this site will deal with parking pressures in the near term,” he says. “Securing the Auckland/Dublin Street corner meant there was space to develop something that may also have visitor value at a future time.” “We now have a site which offers options for the future and that is one of the essentials of good forward planning,” Mr Sowman says At the same time, Picton community groups and organisations are being asked for feedback about library functionality so a design brief can be prepared. “The next step will be for the architecture firms selected from the expression of interest process to convert the brief into a concept plan for the council to review.”
Aucklanders show interest in properties By Jacob Page The number of Aucklanders looking for property in Marlborough has doubled over the past year, according to Marlborough Mayor, Alistair Sowman. He says with the growth in jobs running ahead of the national picture and reasonable housing affordability compared with the north, Marlborough is looking like an attractive proposition. “It shows how attractive the district is becoming to people looking for a better quality of life,” he says. Latest economic statistics for this region show 4.4 per cent economic growth for 2014, well ahead of the
national average of 2.5 per cent. However Mr Sowman says it is not surprising Marlborough is becoming an increasingly attractive prospect for Aucklanders. He points to the latest statistics collected by economic analyst Infometrics showing Marlborough’s average earnings grew 2.7 per cent to $47,100 compared to 2.2 per cent in New Zealand in 2014, and the median house price based on sales in 2014 in Marlborough in 2014 was $306,775 compared to $454,275 in New Zealand. Housing affordability ratios in Marlborough continued to improve, with median house prices now
6.6 times the average earnings in Marlborough, but 8.4 times the average earnings in New Zealand. Auckland’s median house price ($582,525) was almost twice that of Marlborough and almost 10 times the average earnings for people in that region. The price differential means it is an ideal opportunity for Aucklanders who are self-employed or own their own businesses to cash up and move Marlborough, Mr Sowman says. “I know some are continuing to work in Auckland, commuting on the direct flights between here and there. Marlborough Car Club Jubilee The Diamond Jubilee for the Marlborough Car Club will be held on July 25 and 26. An autocross event will be held on the opening morning, with the annual trophy presentations and a dinner with guest speaker motorsport commentator Brian Kelly that night. The club will then open its doors from 10am so people can look through memorabilia and a Motorkhana will be held.
Four injured as car rolls A serious crash in the Awatere Valley left four people in hospital after their car rolled early on Sarurday morning. The car which was travelling from Kaikoura lost control and rolled down a bank into a paddock. All occupants were out of the vehicle by the time ambulance crews arrived. The incident was attended by all emergency services plus helicopters from Nelson and Wellington. Two people with serious injuries were airlifted to Wellington Hospital, a 19-year-old man with multiple injuries and a 23-year-old woman with spine and chest injuries. Two others, a 19-year-old man with neck and back injuries and a 22-yearold woman with minor injuries, were transported by ambulance to Wairau Hospital.

Prepaid electricity an option By Jacob Page The Marlborough Family Budgeting Service is endorsing a prepaid electricity scheme that allows low income people to keep track of their electricity usage. President, Neville White, says the Globug system will help take the financial strain of the monthly power bill, after the company made a presentation to the organisation last week. The system works similar to a prepaid cell phone, where you load credit onto your account and a three-coloured monitor is put into a house to ensure the residents know
when a top up is needed. Green means the household has more than $10 credit. Orange means power will disconnect the following day at 12pm unless you top up before and red is urgent as power will disconnect at midday today unless you top up. With no credit history checks everyone is eligible. “When you have people living on the benefit and perhaps only getting $200 to $300 a week, a big power bill at the end of the month can often prove too much,”
Neville says. Neville says paying electricity bills is the most common challenge faced by the clients he sees. “Clearly if people are coming to us then they are in big trouble in terms of being behind in their bills, so a prepaid method would be a good start.” The electricity is provided at a four per cent cheaper rate than standard prices and Neville says it seems Globug were genuinely committed to giving low economic people and families more options with their money when it came to the electricity bill.

The ‘Heads Up for Kids’ campaign is about people donating their obsolete or foreign currency and donating it to help kids afford to go on projects like Outward Bound and Spirit of Adventure. Lions Clubs around New Zealand have transformed more than 20 tonnes of foreign or outdated currency into funds that benefit children over the past four years. They are hoping to add another five tonnes to that
total this year with their fundraising week which began yesterday and goes through to July 12. People can donate at any Resene store, selected New World supermarkets as well as selected shops in the Blenheim CBD including the Sun office on High Street.

Thanks to an inspired idea from long time supporters of the SPCA, work is about to start on a new indoor dog shelter at Marlborough SPCA. It is the Marlborough SPCA’s biggest project in years. The new shelter will be 36 metres long and 3m wide and will link to the old Lion House which will also be converted to take mums and pups with underfloor heating. Project Warm Paws is a community based project started with seed funding from Lundons Law. The concept of start building and the sponsors will come is paying off with offers already coming in. Exhibitors and visitors alike were happy with their experience at the Marlborough Home and Garden Show over the weekend. Jade Promotions director Anne Joll says interest was higher than last year. “Visitor numbers were slightly up on the 6000 we had last year. We had 15 new exhibitors this year, which made it interesting for show-goers. “They seemed to love the increased variety and said there was a really upbeat and friendly vibe over the three days. Ski camp aims to inspire By Adam Poulopoulos A chance to hit the slopes, make some new friends and listen to an inspiring speaker is behind an annual winter camp scheduled for this month. The camp, run by Play Promotions, is scheduled for July 15-19. Participants are heading to Hanmer Springs to ski or snowboard on Mount Lyford during the day, before a series of activities in the evenings, which includes watching skiing highlight videos taken by a videographer. Each camp is also attended by guest speakers, in this case, Brooke and Jacob Agnew are making the trip from Christchurch for the event. Both have been involved in past camps.
Camp organiser James Galloway says the camp has many benefits. “For me it was a way of experiencing a new sport. A few years ago one girl who had never skied came on camp, and she couldn’t believe the snow. “It’s the relationships you build. Some of the kids have been coming since the age of 13 and the relationships I have built up with them are pretty great.” Play Promotions also hold a summer camp in the Marlborough Sounds each year. Theatre costs Dear Ed, I read in the so-called ‘council news’ that ratepayers are now called on to back the Theatre Trust of a guarantee of over $1 million to see the theatre building completed. and the amount of hire rental and occupancy is required to do this. It appears rental rates will be well beyond the reach of any local group and now it seems every New Zealand city is in the market for overseas touring shows. Marlborough’s population is ageing. Diamonds in the rough After a decade of diamonds, designer creations and making dreams come true; Pam and Ray McCormick have decided the time is right to sell McCormick & Co Nationwide Jewellers. The couple talk to Sun reporter Jacob Page to discuss learning on the job, what makes the perfect diamond and the importance of the local touch. Pam and Ray McCormick have sped past retirement and stuck to their plan. A decade ago both were in their 50s, the chance to live in Marlborough saw them looking for a business opportunity they could work on along with their engineering firm in Ashburton. “We came up here on holiday and we’d always known Noel (Herd) and been into his shop and he just so happened to offer us the business,” Pam says. “We were fortunate that our business in Ashburton was under good management and it was just an opportunity to do something at the right time. “We still have people coming in saying ‘I thought Herd’s was down here somewhere?” Ray says. “I’m sure there will be people who come in and ask where McCormick’s is when a new owner comes along.” Pam, a former classical singing teacher
and Ray, an engineer, knew little about the jewellery industry but set about creating a 10-year business plan to make the most of the business and then sell up. “It was a challenge to learn something new and any challenge that I like to take on, I like to train up on it, whether it’s business or personal,” Pam says. “We had plenty of people in the industry that helped us at the beginning… We did any course we could to try to learn and upskill,” Ray says. The couple became accredited diamond brokers from Antwerp and made a trip each year to source the highest calibre diamonds. The couple spend five days searching through bags of diamonds for the perfect diamonds for their clients. “You go into the diamond quarter on Antwerp which is high security and you go into
a room and they bring you literally bags of diamonds and you sit down and sort through them,” Pam says. “You can tell by the surface of them whether you like them or not.” “With a good diamond, it’s all about clarity, colour and cut,” Ray says. Pam says there have been times she had a diamond catch her eye only for it to be snapped up by another jeweller. “It sounds like fun but after five days of studying bags and bags of diamonds you’re absolutely exhausted. “One of the real pleasures has been the ability to satisfy people’s desire for something special.” “People look to you for people to supply their dream…It’s about knowing what your customer’s wants and listening to them,” Pam says.
The couple still plan on living in Marlborough and will be keen players in the evolution of the Blenheim business district while they also “step back” and focus their time on the engineering firm in Ashburton. They say they enjoy the long drives together and have always enjoyed working together. “The jewellery business has meant we have been around each other a lot more but it’s been enjoyable,” Pam says. “We have a good system when we drive to Ashburton, Ray says. “I like to get away early and get a few kilometres under my belt and while I get car sick trying to write stuff down, Pam is very good at that so it works. The couple are in no rush to sell the business to just anyone. “It has to be right person to carry on things but I’m sure that person is out there,” Pam says.

Effects of section locations Before purchasing a section to build a new home on, you should research the section and consider how its location could affect building costs. Here are just a few things to think about when planning to purchase a section. Location and building costs The location of your section can have a bearing on building costs. For example, your new section may have an amazing view, perched on a cliff overlooking the sea. But it will also be exposed to the wind, the risk of erosion or flooding, and the risk of corrosion to materials. Wind Houses exposed to high winds have to be designed appropriately, for example the building may need extra bracing and may attract a higher score on the weathertightness risk matrix. Erosion and flooding There is provision in the Building Act 2004 for the council to refuse to grant a building consent if the land is at risk of a natural hazard, such as erosion, flooding, subsidence, or slippage, or if the building work itself is likely to accelerate the problem. If the council decides that there is a risk from a natural hazard but the building work won’t worsen the problem, it may grant a building consent but must advise the

Registrar-General of Land, who will note on the certificate of title that a building consent has been issued under section 72. So take special care to check the certificate of title for any section 72 endorsements on the title which will alert you to the fact that the land is at risk of erosion, flooding or subsidence. Insurance may also be a problem if the section has an erosion risk. You are automatically covered by EQC insurance when you take out private insurance cover for your home or belongings and the EQC premium is built into the premium you pay your own insurance company.

Covenants and easements Covenants and easements are restrictions and obligations on the use of the section. They are usually put on the title by the developer when the land is subdivided. But anyone - for example, a person selling off a back section subdivided from their own property – can impose covenants and easements to give themselves some control over the way the new section is used. What should be in the legal contract for purchasing a section, and what legal advice should you get before you sign? When you buy a section from someone, you are entering into a contract with you as the purchaser and them as the vendor. You sign a sale and purchase agreement, which will contain the terms and conditions for purchase of the section. The sale and purchase agreement will usually be drawn up by the person selling the section, or by the real estate agent. An example of what the sale and purchase agreement should contain:
• The details of the certificate of title. • Any improvements to be made by the vendor before settlement, for example to services. • The price, including the deposit. • Provision for adjustments to be made to land tax, council rates and water rates. • The rights of the parties to cancel the contract. There are also a list of special clauses that make the agreement conditional. Get legal advice before signing anything, read the agreement thoroughly.

Going the extra mile Spring Creek Service Station By Celeste Lodewyk There is plenty of friendly banter to be heard when visiting the Spring Creek Service Station. Whether it’s between staff and customers or the mechanics in the workshop, the friendly environment is testament to why the Spring Creek Service Station is a popular choice for many motorists. Nestled between the Spring Creek Dairy and the Junction Hotel, the business is owned by Fletch and Jo Kydd. If he’s not out the front chatting with customers, Fletch can usually be found in the workshop repairing and servicing all manners of vehicles. Working alongside him is fully qualified mechanic Shane Smith who began there 10 years ago as an apprentice. There is not alot they don’t service, laughs Fletch, who jokes about the size of some of the vehicles that come in. “One day I was in the workshop and the place went dark on me. I looked up and it was a huge earth moving truck that come in for a welding job. “Being a semi-rural garage we tend to get a bit of everything coming in,” he laughs. Fletch and Jo have owned the business for more than 20 years, and although it was the same back then in size, the business itself has grown. “The workshop and fuel side of it has increased. “We have been fortunate to have retained
many of our loyal customers, even from as far as Darfield,” Fletch says. Originally from Otago, Fletch arrived in Marlborough in the 1970’s. His career in the automotive industry began when he did his apprenticeship with Toyota. After a stint in Australia, Fletch returned to Marlborough and together with wife Jo set their sights on the Spring Creek Service Station as a business opportunity. “It’s been great. We have had wonderful support from the community here and the wider region,” he says. In the workshop, Fletch and Shane have all the up-to-date diagnostic tools and can service 4WD’s and cars, as well as warrant of fitness testing and light engineering. “We really do go out of our way to chase mechanical problems to solve them as economically as we can for our customers.” At the pumps, the station recently joined NPD fuel company and offers Blenheim prices. He is also pleased to say they will honour all ‘main’ supermarket discount vouchers as well as SuperGold cards. “We accept all main supermarket fuel docket and give you 12c discount per litre, no matter what value is displayed on the docket,” Fletch says. Saint Vincent de Paul Picton in good hands By Adam Poulopoulos Picton’s Saint Vincent de Paul store has diversified in the last year, with good results. The store, on Upper High Street, has installed shelving for books and bric-a-brac items since manager Marianne Govaerts took over in April last year. Marianne says the experiment has been a great success. “It seems to be going really well. A lot of dealers cone through here looking for a bargain.” She says the store is also in line to increase its opening hours.
“With the medical centre opening next door we will look to open a couple of extra days.” Currently the store opens from 10am-4pm Tuesday and Friday. The shop also takes donations of clothes, toys, bedding and fruit and vegetables, and rent out a two-bedroom flat on the site to those in need. It also held collection campaigns for disaster-stricken Nepal and Vanuatu, as well as Christchurch and Seddon in the past. The Blenheim Skate Jam, organised by local Bec Moorhouse, was a huge success. Madd Gear Pro (MGP Australia and New Zealand) sponsored Thomas Fitzgerald-Grout, Jaydon McKenzie and Sean McFarland to travel to Blenheim from the North Island to attend the event. Asked what they thought of the event, the trio commented on the relaxed nature and good turnout. “It’s been a great day and well organised,” Thomas says. Jaydon adds; “There’s a nice atmosphere here, I’m glad I got the opportunity to come.” They carried out regular demonstra-
tions throughout the day, including daring somersaults and high flying antics which delighted, and often awed the crowd. Christchurch man Bradley Goudie of the ScooterPro store also travelled to Blenheim upon hearing of the event, to offer giveaway prizes and commentary. He wasn’t the only one. A group of youths came from Nelson for the opportunity to meet the pro riders and show off their own skills. SFF Shareholders vote for meeting Silver Fern Farms farmer shareholders have given over six percent of proxy votes, well above the required five percent needed to call a special meeting of the SFF board, says West Otago farmer Allan Richardson. “We have been overwhelmed by shareholder support, both large and small, and have now secured over six percent of farmers proxy votes.
“The special meeting will give all shareholders the opportunity to review a full analysis of the options facing Silver Fern Farms and that we, as farmers, must have a say in how the co-operative moves forward,” Allan says. Allan and Clinton farmer John Cochrane coordinated a small team of shareholders who contacted farmers as part of the grass roots farmer
initiative. “Farmers feel left out of the process, they want a cost benefit analysis done on the two coops working together, they want to see the facts so they can make an informed decision themselves,” John says. Allan adds; “We attained the proxy forms quickly and this sends a clear message to the SFF board that farmers are
unhappy about going down the foreign investment track and the ownership implications that could eventuate from this. “Clearly the board should have first investigated fully the potential gains of $100m/ pa tabled in the MIE report, released in March 2015.” Allan sent the proxy forms to Silver Fern Farms recently.

Paddon and Kennard finish fourth in Poland By Jacob Page Kiwi rally duo Hayden Paddon and Blenheim’s John Kennard secured fourth place in Rally Poland, the second consecutive top four finish for the Kiwis in their 2015 World Rally Championship season. Following the fast and challenging legs on Friday and Saturday, Paddon and Kennard went into Sunday’s short leg with a strong hold on fifth place. With two runs of the same 14.6 km stage to complete, Paddon and Kennard had a 19.4 second margin to Hyundai team-mate Thierry Neuville in sixth. Ahead of them on the leader-board, there was a difference of 36.6 seconds to fourth-placed Jari-Matti Latvala. The New Zealanders stayed focused on finishing the rally in a top five position, seeking to back up their second place finish in Sardinia in June. They started Sunday tenth
on the road – the start order for the final day being the reverse of the rally classification – to tackle the final 29.20 competitive kilometres. Neuville tried to apply pressure, rolled his Hyundai i20 WRC, but was able to carry on. Paddon delivered yet another top five stage time and, combined with Neuville’s slower time, then had a 31.1 second buffer over his team-mate going into the repeated run for the final stage. A seventh-fastest time on the final stage was all Paddon and Kennard needed to secure fifth place. But then came the news that fourth-placed Latvala, in his intense battle with Ott Tänak for third, had hit a tree on the stage and damaged his radiator. Latvala worked hard to repair his car sufficiently to make it to the finish, but a 40 second penalty for checking in late worked in Paddon’s favour, elevating the New Zealander to fourth.
